Prostate, chronic pain and treatment with palmitoylethanolamide

The prostate can be the cause of a plethora of chronic problems and pain. Here we explain and encourage treatment of pain chronic prostate complaints for cases where cancer has been ruled out. The prostate as a source of chronic pain. The prostate is a remarkable gland, which doesn’t always serve men in the intended agreeable way. It can start to function independently. It usually includes urination problems like slower urination, restriction of flow, continued dribbling of urine and a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying.

 

The prostate and urine culture

In case of prostate problems it’s common to hand in a urine sample for culturing at the doctor’s office. This way they can check if the prostrate is inflamed or if it contains any bacteria. When this is the case there’s often still the question if the bacteria is the cause or the result of the prostate complaints. In some cases nothing is found in the culture. However, the pain remain.

 

The prostate and prostate hypertrophy, and the prostatism complaints

In half of all men over 50 the prostate is swollen, which is called is called prostate hypertrophy. This isn’t necessarily a problem, but could be the cause of prostate complaints like difficulty urinating etc. That entire range of complaints is called prostatism. The doctor can check if there is nothing malignant hiding behind the swollen prostate. The first step in finding out is the so-called rectal examination. In this case a finger is used to inspect inside of the rectum and feel for the size and consistency of the prostate. An enlarged prostate with lumps will mean that the urologist will continue to examine if prostate cancer is present.

 

Prostate cancer

If it turns out that there are suspicious lumps in the enlarged prostate it doesn’t have to be the end of the world. It is very possible that it’s a case of benign prostate cancer that has been there for years. Nowadays, removing the prostate in total mostly is an unnecessary procedure. Fortunately because the prostate is surrounded by small nerves that could be damaged when the prostate is removed. A result of this is the inability to erect the penis, so causing impotence.

 

Prostate complaints, chronic pain and no bacteria

You suffer from chronic pain caused by the prostate, but no bacteria have been found in the culture. Or maybe bacteria have been found and you get antibiotics. But once the inflammatory cells decide it is war many of these cells become overactive and start to produce small molecules, a type of protein molecule, called inflammation mediators. A war is being initiated without a cause, because there are no bacteria.

 

The prostate and the general, the mast cell

Late Nobel Prize winner professor Levi-Montalcini, who lived up to be 103 years old, used to call one of the most important cells in this inflammatory process the prima donna cell of inflammation.  This mast cell.  [1] [2] This cell is the general in the war without an enemy and it recruits, an army of inflammatory cells and inflammation mediators. This causes a flood of problems, including pain in the pelvis and problems urinating.

Professor Montalcini studied the mast cell and inflammation mediators her entire life and was awarded the Nobel Prize for her work in 1986. This didn’t stop her from continuing her work. On the contrary, she kept on working hard and at almost 90 years of age she discovered a very special anti-inflammatory and pain reliever that calms the mast cells, called palmitoylethanolamide.

This substance is a body’s own fatty acid and what’s special about it is that it both has a pain relieving as well as an anti-inflammatory effect. There’s no need to worry about nasty side effects because this is a natural substance produced by our own body. What is this substance called? It has the difficult name palmitoylethanolamide and is available under the brand name PEA in the United States

 

Breakthrough in chronic pain: treatment with PEA

Cost and use of treatment with PEA

The cost come down to €125 for two months; 6 packages of 30 capsules of PEA of 400mg each. Because PEA is a bodily substance, with virtually no side effects, it is much more pleasant to take than chemical drugs with side effects. However, the substance can safely be used on top of common painkillers. Even better, sometimes this substance works so well that it decreases the side effects of other drugs.

PEA can be used by patients with chronic pain and inflammation that is hard to treat. This is very useful in the war that takes place in the prostate. PEA calms the mast cell and the flood of problems decreases.

For the first 10 days the dose is 400mg three times a day, straight from the capsule placed under the tongue. This is the best way in our opinion. If you find that is too complicated, you can just swallow the capsules. After that take the 400mg capsules 3 times a day for another 8-10 weeks.

If this is effective, you can change the dose to 400mg twice a day. If the pain returns, increase the dose temporarily back to 400mg three times a day, or even taking the powder under the tongue for 10 days again.

Because chronic prostrate pain is a long process we believe that a minimum treatment period of 2 months should be observed.

For this reason we always advise to order 6 packages of PEA at once. If the pain didn’t decrease significantly it’s not practical to continue taking PEA.

 

Prostatodynia, painful pelvic floor and interstitial cystitis

Here we will share more details on prostate pain. There is a difficult medical term for prostate pain, namely prostatodynia.

The pain can be quite aggravating, burning, sharp, nagging or even a biting pain. Problems urinating are not always continuously present as these usually come in waves. There will be periods without complaints. The pain can increase during cold or wet weather, psychological stress, nervousness, alcohol use and even heavily spiced food and sitting for long periods.

Prostate pain is not a medically dangerous condition. It is not the pre-stage of prostate cancer, as some people think it is. It’s not harmful but it is inconvenient and can negatively affect the quality of life and sexual relationships. Painful prostate for men and painful pelvic floor for women. It’s probably useful to discuss the female variation on prostate pain. It is a similar inflammation, but located on the wall of the bladder. The difficult word for this is interstitial cystitis. The cause for interstitial cystitis is not knows, same as in the case of prostate inflammation. It is also an escalated inflammatory response, located on the wall of the bladder, caused by different possible factors and which could be aggravated by stress.

 

Assessment of treatment with PEA

Many studies have been conducted about the effectiveness and safety of PEA for a number of chronic pain problems. The substance is safe and is already naturally present in our own body. Therefore we give a green light for treatment with PEA.
