Palmitoylethanolamide (N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)hexadecanamide) for hernia

We write a lot about the body’s own pain reliever palmitoylethanolamide, mainly because this pain relieving substance keeps surprising us. In recent years it became available in its purest form with no added excipients, taste modifiers or anything else.

Why Is palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) Important for Hernia Patients?

This substance can distinctly relieve severe pain caused by hernia and do that without any side effects. A more difficult name for this natural substance is (N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)hexadecanamide.

This publication discusses all data and results currently reached with this substance and is specifically of interest to doctors who are interested to inform themselves of the clinical meaning of this supplement.

There’s practically nothing that can relieve hernia pain, including the best pharmaceutical treatments.

However, a study among 118 patients showed that using the palmitoylethanolamide supplement for several weeks clearly and measurably decreased the pain.

Standard treatment of hernia pain with palmitoylethanolamide: let’s add that..

Patients with neuropathic pain were assigned to standard treatment plus PEA (600 mg/day) or standard treatment for 30 days. Changes in visual analog scale, and score on Oswestry Disability Index and SF-12® Health Survey were assessed at baseline and follow-up.

The mean age of the 118 patients evaluated was 48.4 years, and 47 (40.9%) were women. In the group comparison, significantly larger improvements were seen in the PEA group for visual analog scale and the physical component of the SF-12 Health Survey.

The addition of PEA to standard treatment shows an improvement in pain relief in patients with neuropathic pain due to lumbosciatica. PEA was well tolerated.

Future investigations of the role of PEA in the treatment of neuropathic pain might help to define novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of this kind of neuropathic pain.

In this study PEA seems to have an additional value yet again. No side effects or interactions with other medicine have been reported.
