Arthrosis pain: hope for people with joint pain

Joint and arthrosis pain can ruin your life. It’s a nagging, constantly present and tiring pain, with pangs through the hip, knee, thumbs or wrists.

Painkillers… side effects!

You go to see a doctor and get prescribed painkillers. These often have side effects on the stomach, in which case the doctor needs to prescribe another chemical medicine, usually omeprazole, to counteract those side effects. This is a bizarre situation. There has been a breakthrough with a natural pain relief and anti-inflammatory substance that is practically free of side effects.

Natural pain relief without side effects

Finally, there’s a new solution. A natural substance, produced in our own body, which is anti-inflammatory and reliefs pain. It’s a substance that works very subtle and has practically no side effects, called palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), which is available in the United States under the name PEA.

In a study among people with arthrosis pain, in which this substance was compared to the regular painkillers that are so hard on the stomach, this natural substance even appeared to work better.

In experimental studies PEA also seems to work well. For example here you can see on a special arthrosis animal model of mice with severe arthrosic pain in the joints, and that couldn’t walk anymore due to the pain, how the swelling of the joints decreased after giving them PEA.  The red line is the swelling of the joints without PEA, the blue line shows there is no swelling with PEA and the green line is the joints of healthy mice.

Arthrosis pain: palmitoylethanolamide: a natural pain relief

Because arthrosis pain is so common, a doctor in pharmacology at the university of Rome conducted a unique study that gives us insight in to why palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) can be so extraordinary for arthrosis joint pain.

They treated a number of mice that had a severe form of arthrosis with this substance. To start with, the mice were virtually unable to walk because their legs hurt so much, you couldn’t touch them, they would shrivel up from the pain (called the mechanical allodynia test according to Von Frey) and their joints were swollen. Inflammation substances were present in their joints as well. One of the most important inflammatory substances is TNF-alpha.

Over the course of two weeks, the mice were treated with PEA for their pain and swelling in the joints. After that the analyses were done.

PEA decreases pain, swelling and inflammation with arthrosis and improves the ability to walk.

The professor administered all the mice PEA through their food, called per os, dosed at 30mg per kg of weight. That’s the same dose we use on people.

After the mice took this natural pain relief substance, several things changed positively:

  1. The pain decreased
  2. The swelling in the joints decreased
  3. Walking improved
  4. The levels of inflammatory substances in the joints decreased

Not only did PEA have a positive effect on the pain and swelling, it also improved walking and flexibility of the joints.

Activating the natural self-healing ability!

Treating pain with natural substances is in line with the vision of a world-famous neurologist, professor Erminio Costa, who introduced the slogan ‘follow where nature leads’ last century. This means that when we treat conditions we should first look at the self-healing ability of the body and see what we can learn from it. This turns out to be a very interesting approach that has already benefited many patients.

Take 1200mg PEA per day in 2-3 doses (400mg capsules) for the first few weeks and double the dose in case of insufficient effect for the next few weeks. The effects are usually noticeable between 2-8 weeks.
